Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) wrote his five-act allegorical drama Peer Gynt in 1867 while living in Italy. It tells the story of the downfall and subsequent redemption of a Norwegian peasant anti-hero. Unlike Ibsen’s previous dramas, it was written in verse and wasn’t originally intended for stage performance.

STORY. Peer Gynt is a reckless trouble-maker. He tells terrible lies about trolls and his adventures. Everyone in his village is fed up with him, and certainly no girl would ever marry him. Least of all pretty Solveig (pron. Sull-vay), whom Peer admires from afar. In the end he decides to live high in the mountains, away from everyone.

Grieg agreed to the task, but struggled to do complete it because the story moved so slowly. He did manage to finish, and the music has been one of his most recognized works.
